I remember the ocean...

That place where my feet feel at home

And my ears are filled with the persistent beat of the waves.

I remember the ocean...

Where the dogs run and play

and forget about the day.

I remember the ocean...

How it soothed my soul

and loosened my body.

I remember the ocean...

Where the sun rises bring back,

What the sun sets tucked away.

I remember the ocean...

Exactly how I feel at the ocean!

I moved from the ocean to the forest 5 years ago. I love the forest for different reasons, even more than the ocean (the quiet for one), however, the thing I can't replace is walking barefoot in the sand. You really can't do that in the forest in most places. Your feet end up covered with sap and needles and ick. (Ask me how I know this LOL).

Part of me is being called back to the ocean though...we'll see.

Yes, I do also. My perfect home would be an ocean or lake in front of me and a forest behind me. I actually have a beautiful little private lake about 5 minutes from me that I have access to all summer but it's only 3 months (tops) of each year so I miss the water the rest of the year.

Hawaii is perfect for that! Haha, we visit my sister’s beach house on Hatteras Island a few times per year, it’s just wonderful there as well. I also love going to Shennandoah Mountains, hard to decide which I like the most

"Ocean"

If the ocean was something next door

Id be a different sort

I would visit it more often

trying each day to understand its creatures

feel its vastness pull around my funk all day

wait for its storms to pass

pressing my face against the glass on rainy days

I lived near the ocean and thought I would visit it each day, but ended up hardly going there!

I think it had something to do with the buildings all around the beach!

I live near the ocean and don't visit it as often as I should. Great reminder.

I recently wrote one, but it's more abstract.

The waves are growing

Higher, fiercer, stronger,

Rolling, roaring, growling,

Breaking, falling, foaming.

The waves are rising,

Seething, screaming, crying,

Reaching farther, higher.

I'm diving.

Choking.

Drowning.

Waves crash, then soothe the shore,

Changing rock-sharp edges

into smooth sand,

and our feet sink deep into echoes of grace,

while birds and children race the foamy edges.

“Ocean Unforgotten”

You came in as a wave

And swept my heart away

In which a fire burnt

And burns me till this day

So cool and calm, so quiet

Just as you neared my lands

You left me all deserted

Still struggling in the sands

So lost and wrecked, so fallen

A ship straining in the furies

Never did find its way back

Through those myriad memories

This is an excerpt from one of my favorite poems - Line Dried Sheets, found in my book of poetry We Swallow Light. When I read the whole poem, tears well up. Every time.

.

I want to hold the sky

forever in my sight

the oceans green and blue

all hues and tones

the depth of light

and height of darkness

and always

to see your eyes smile.

.

I want birdsong at sunrise

their humming fills my ears

with cool smooth songs that speak

and seek the ocean depths.

.

The piercing eagle cry

as it calls to its mate

and the sound of your voice

the deep heat of your breath

speaking words of love.

.

I want stillness

and peace

and line-dried sheets.

.

Soft down blankets

to wrap us close

and hold us safe

and in our arms

there is love

until the end of things.

.

Do not chase love, or perfection,

or attention, or validation.

Do not chase any of these things.

Chase the call of the wild;

the song in your heart,

the ocean in your bones.

Chase the time when you were free

to roam, and dream, and fall in time

with the setting sun.

Lovely poems, I especially like the thought of the moon being jealous. I love the ocean, I used to live a block from it, here is how it always made me feel:

In whispers and roars

Mighty ocean declares man

Insignificant

Thanks for the fun prompts!

The ocean waves are my soundtrack

As I watch over the monk seal

Lounging on his beach

Tiny twine and signs posted for protection

The refrain, his grunts and children's laughter
