I really enjoyed this post. My grandparents were "real" journalists in the sense you describe, albeit in the rural USA, and I have definitely inherited the blunt, "too-direct" approach to things as well!

Your father and I are from the same generation. Perhaps he was familiar with my friend, journalist, and writer Lyuba Kovalevska, who predicted the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, where she worked as a newspaper editor in Pripyat a month before the catastrophe in her Literaturna Ukraina article, She received the Order of Courage in New York a little later. Your post stirred up a lot of memories.
